Amanda Nunes waves goodbye from familiar No. 1 spot in pound-for-pound women's rankings

Amanda Nunes announces retirement after dominant win at UFC 289 (1:21)

Amanda Nunes leaves her belts and gloves in the Octagon after announcing her retirement from fighting at UFC 289. (1:21)

If Amanda Nunes follows through with the retirement announcement she made following Saturday's dominant decision win over Irene Aldana, she will leave the sport from a very familiar position: on top.

As has been the case with other high-profile MMA retirements in recent times, the ESPN pound-for-pound rankings will retain Nunes for this update. If her retirement sticks, Nunes will be removed the next time our panel votes on a women's top 10.

The other big winner at UFC 289 was Charles Oliveira, who reasserted himself as a lightweight to contend with by finishing Beneil Dariush in the first round. But there was no upward movement available to Oliveira in the men's top 10, because he already was ranked highly, behind only some of the most dominant champions in the sport.

One departure from the rankings: Rose Namajunas, who last competed in May 2022 and no longer is eligible for our women's top 10.

Note: Results are current; rankings as of June 12. In order to be eligible for the rankings, a fighter must have competed over the past 12 months or must have an upcoming fight booked. Fighters who have been dropped for inactivity can be reinstated only after they compete.
